Make Bold Choices
I had a college acting professor and director, Dale McGilliard, who pushed his acting students to “Make Bold Choices”! It was his credo. I remember him saying it so often that it has imprinted itself into my memory.
He was championing his actors to step outside of the box. As an actor works on creating a character there is much experimentation. There is a great deal of research and creativity that goes into the process. It’s is very easy for an actor to work on the character, interpret the script and then make safe and expected choices for the character. It is far more difficult to make bold choices. Bold choices require the actor to put him or herself at risk. Bold choices are easy for others to criticize and to ridicule. Bold choices are hard to make. Fortunately, bold choices are also, typically, the most interesting ones to watch. When an actor, or anyone, makes a bold choice, the payoff can be much higher than when they make the typical or expected choice.
Onstage, I have found that Dale was right on. When I have chosen to step away from the easy choice and make the far more difficult, yet bold choice, the payoff has been much higher and much more fulfilling. Offstage, Dale was right as well. Over the last twelve years or so, I’ve followed the less traveled path. I’ve been a professional entertainer for over a decade now and have had adventures, have experienced hardship and have enjoyed great artistic success because I have chosen to “Make Bold Choices”! It hasn’t been always easy, but it’s been worth it. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
So, here’s my question to you. Are you making bold choices? It’s easy to stay in our comfort zone. It’s easy to do what we’ve always done. But if we aren’t making bold choices every day, then we can never change the world. And yes, I mean change the world. You can certainly change your own world. And you might just find that by changing your world, you also change the rest of the world, too. Get outside your box. Push yourself to be the best you that you can be. Don’t be afraid to explore your muse and to share your God given talents and gifts with the rest of the world. Trust me, we need you.
So go out there and “Make Bold Choices”. And by doing so, you’ll make both yourself and Dale, proud.
This one is for you Dale. Thank you for your inspiration!
